SAHF 2025 Year in Review
As 2025 draws to a close, the South Asia Hydromet Forum (SAHF) reflects on a year of meaningful progress in strengthening regional collaboration, advancing technical frameworks, and enhancing hydromet and climate services across South Asia.
These achievements would not have been possible without the continued engagement, expertise, and commitment of our National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs), sectoral agencies, development partners, and technical institutions.
Strengthened Regional Governance and Strategic Direction
In May 2025, the Fourth Session of the SAHF Executive Council marked a significant milestone in consolidating SAHF’s strategic vision. The Executive Council endorsed key regional roadmaps, including the Observational Networks Strategy 2030, the Regional Numerical Weather Prediction Strategy 2030, and the Impact-Based Forecasting (IBF) Work Plan, while also establishing new Working Groups on Climate Services and Hydrology.
Advanced Thematic Areas through the Technical Working Groups
Planning Workshop on IBF and Climate Services
The event, held on 21–24 January 2025, was convened to accelerate the region’s transition toward more anticipatory, user-centered early warning systems.
Climate Services Workshop
The inaugural meeting, held on June 24-26, marked an important milestone in establishing a coordinated framework for climate service development across the region.
Regional Workshop on Framework and Toolkit Development
The workshop strengthened temperature-related climate services across South Asia by co-developing a regional framework and toolkit for heat and cold IBF services.
NWP Working Group Meeting
The Working Group (WG) gathered to collectively refine the Regional Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) Strategy & Roadmap 2025–2030, focusing on modernizing forecasting systems across South Asia.
Hydrology Working Group Inception Meeting
The WG Inception Meeting convened to define the group’s mandate and chart priority actions for strengthening flood forecasting and hydrological services.
On February 27th, SAHF, through the CARE for South Asia Component 1 Project, conducted a back-to-back training workshop on its two foundational platforms: the SAHF Knowledge Hub (SKHub) and Data Exchange (DataEx) platform to strengthen their ability to access, analyze, and apply regional datasets.
Forecasters’ Forum
The Forum, now on 200+ sessions, remains a cornerstone of operational collaboration, convening regularly to share model guidance, monitor emerging hazards, and enhance cross-border situational awareness.
Launched New Regional Initiatives
New projects were initiated in 2025 to support the delivery of IBF for temperature-related hazards, the establishment of a coordinated regional climate services framework, and the harmonization of early warning systems across South Asia.
WISER Programme
Under the WISER Programme, managed by the UK Met Office and funded by the UK FCDO, SAHF launched two new initiatives: one enhancing impact-based forecasting and early warning systems for temperature-related hazards (2025–2027), and another strengthening regionally coordinated climate services to improve coherence and effectiveness across South Asia (2025–2026).
CREWS South Asia
This CREWS South Asia Project (2025–2029) leverages regional synergies to harmonize early warning efforts across South Asia, aligned with WMO RA II and SAHF priorities and developed in close collaboration with RIMES and regional partners.
